Earlier this year, an AI system accessed parts of an Australian Government Medicare website that it was not authorised to enter while carrying out an online research task. Medicare is Australia’s public health insurance system, which helps cover the cost of medical care.

The system was a type of AI that can do more than just answer questions. An ‘AI agent’ can take actions on its own, such as searching websites, using tools and completing several steps to finish a task. In this case, the agent accessed public and non-public files, although there is currently no evidence that personal Medicare information was accessed.
